I was speaking to some people about the value of edges. The edges are where stuff happens ... things are usually quite quiet at the center of systems ... the centers of hurricanes, centers of social groups, centers of forests, centers of churches -- all quiet! The center is a comfortable place.
But at the edge, that's where things get exciting! The edge is where things and people change, it's the interface of systems and the interface of people. On the edge everything is thrown into sharp relief, you see the shapes, feel the sharp outlines, and find new understanding by seeing the contrasts. Relationships have an edge, social groups have an edge, and churches have an edge. Its a disturbing place to be, its a place Christians are called to live.
At the edge energy is exchanged, storms occur, and things get messy. When you stand on the edge you're pulled and tugged, and unless you have a firm foundation to stand on, you'll be tossed and turned and even hurt.
But the edge is where change happens. If you want to change, you need to stand on the edge of your comfort zone. Jesus stands on the edge. Where do I stand?
