Sensory deprivation
Pink Floyd's classic magical song of '79 says it all; "Is there anybody out there?" The song repeats it over and over again, searching for feeling, sight and sound. And the irony is that we're moved by the emotive music (especially that haunting melody in the second half of the song), and by the evocative thoughts it arouses. And in "Comfortably numb" he captures the essence when he sings: |
I've listened to the week’s coffee conversations as we move our mouths to let other people know we're alive and important. We say "Isn't it terrible? What a tragedy? Poor squatters. I can't afford medical insurance for my dog!" But really, how many people actually feel the gut wrenching lurch of emotions that our words should imply, that come if we actually held the hand of a maimed man. What should be real is instead shielded by our big-screen home theatre surround sound living room world of today. |
