Jesus is scary
Today I have a letter that I received from a lady in the church who is deeply in love with Jesus. She replied to my squeal test of a few weeks ago, I thought this would be just the note of honesty needed to offset the apathy of the world today. [email protected]
Dear Mordecai: Squeal …we did miss u, and as you touched on my favorite subject with your next letter, I just had to sing along:
JESUS IS SCARY!
G-D IS WILD!
CHRISTIANITY IS HARD,
AND THE HOLY SPIRIT VERY IMTIMIDATING AT TIMES!
So why, if our biggest and most basic desire as a human species is to be re-united with the GOD of the universe, do our little boots rock so badly when He visits us?
I venture to say the answer lies in the same thing that starts wars and feeds all evil and disorders: CONTROL. We want it, we don’t wanna share it, and we want more of it in every aspect of our lives. WHY – because we fear the unknown, and GOD is so unknown that he gave us eternity as a gift that will enable us to explore HIM. Small wonder we fear HIM. We should.
Coming back down to earth, and Alpha, and your question “Who is Jesus to you?”
I know Alpha is designed to start discussions that ultimately lead to real faith, but I find myself very grateful that I don’t have to listen to the groping for control that’s uttered in the groups weekly. This reaction of mine stings me, as it exposes both my impatience with what could be a real searching heart – albeit disguised under endless intellectual questioning – and my incapability to deal with such a situation correctly, or at least, in love. My problem is that the endless arguing makes me wonder weather people are really searching for a very real and ACTIVE GOD – that they will have to serve then – or whether this is just a search for that copout from faith that you mention in. OF COURSE, I don’t know the answer. Only God can test the heart. (Praise HIM). Remembering this sobering fact I thank Him for exposing mine, once again, and I repent of my judgmental attitude. (What would we do without Him??)
I thank Him for the people (especially Alpha leaders) that can deal with these discussions in love, and I try to help them – with out opening my mouth!! Ha-ha. How? I will do what Jesus did long ago, and try to portray ONE of the uncountable things HE IS – THE ONE WHO PICKED UP THE TOWEL. Will we let Him serve us?
That’s the beginning of the end – our end! Shalom and Chag Shamach
